Free from YSL has been everywhere since its release a few years ago. Its success leads to the release of Libre Intense, as an enhanced flankers scent. I grabbed samples of each of them for my upcoming review of these perfumes, but I wanted to do a comparison first. Which one smells better? Are you the one to buy?

Opening

Libre starts with a strong burst of orange blossom (maybe some extra citrus sprinkled in) and lavender, which will grow stronger.

It's soapy, slightly musky, and has a distinct creaminess to it all.

The main change I get during wear is the lavender becoming dominant and the musk coming out on top. A very small orchid compared to Intense and vanilla it is not front and center.

At this point, Libre Intense is starting to taste good to me, but it's not high in sugar or anything. A little lavender/musk soapiness, a lot of orchid, and orange blossom in common. Vanilla is a big player in every dressing season.

Which do I choose? I'm enjoying Harder a little more than the first one. It's not a wide range, but I like the different parts and the subdued lavender.

It really reminds me of a more feminine Strong and you Armani or one of those flankers.

Edge: It's hard

An estimate

Libre is not a weak scent. I would only rate it in the upper middle range, if not firmly in the strong camp. As a typical designer outfit, it has a lot of predictability and will be very noticeable in the atmosphere around you, even after the opening act.

However, as a design, it doesn't match Intense's abilities. Libre Intense is not the strongest scent, but it definitely packs a punch. Bold and very good access, at least for a while.

This list is lighter on Intense, but that doesn't mean Libre isn't good on its own.

Edge: It's hard

Long life

Again, both of these perfumes are fantastic in their performance. Libre will last 8-9 hours, on my skin. Which, all things considered, is about what you'd want in most cases.

Libre Intense comes in at double the hours. Maybe 12-ish or longer. YSL didn't skimp on the design.

Testing Many times, it seems that you want to continue, even with a small investment. It takes this class.

Edge: It's hard

Flexibility

This is where Libre EDP finds its edge. It's lightweight, allowing it to fit into the daytime, where the Intense can't do as well. Tightness strikes me as something to wear at night.

Also, Intense is a great cold weather scent. If it is not too hot, it will be fine, but more than that it will melt. EDP is not for hot temperatures, but it can go into spring without a problem.

Edge: Free

The whole smell

I love both of these perfumes. I'm not in love with them, but for what they are, you get a nice scent and good performance. YSL has done well with this line.

The free EDP is a lovely fragrance. There are so many flowers. If you're looking for a mix of lavender and orange blossom, this might be for you. It's not very heavy, but it wears well.

Libre Intense is better, in my opinion. Not only because of better performance, but also, I think it has more depth and better balance. I like that the lavender is not that heavy. The orchid is enhanced and the vanilla rises.

The formula is the same, naturally, but the balance of the points themselves is just better overall. If you are a fan of lavender in perfumes you can go with any of these for a good designer note.

It's not a huge win for Intense, but it gets the nod.

Update: Back to these scents, I still prefer Intense. By far, it is my second favorite scent in the Libre line of perfumes. However, I think Le Parfum is the best and I would go with it.

Le Parfum is thick and slightly different from the others. But, it's the better composition and more similar to the two releases during its dry season.

Winner: Libre Intense
